Newcastle is the last town before you get to Auburn off of I-80 and is nestled in the Sierra Nevada foothills. Back in the mid-19th century Newcastle was known for all of its orchards and the packing sheds are still in town. Today the packing sheds are occupied by local artists, La Fornaretta Italian food restaurant, the Rat Trap for one of the best sandwiches around and I can’t forget Ve Loyce the head monster and his co monster Tom at the Monsters of Massage which is more torture than pleasure but it sure helps with over worked bodies! Stopping at Newcastle Produce is also a must for local produce, great prepared foods and coffee drinks.
On the hill across the freeway from the packing sheds and “down town” you’ll find the cutest neighborhood which is home to the local ball park and is surrounded by old quaint homes. You’re not going to find any typical sub-divisions around Newcastle instead there are homes on property. All the locals seems to think that if you live below Newcastle you’re in the fog and from Newcastle up towards the Sierras you out of the fog but that’s just not always the case. There’s many a day when Auburn is in the fog and Rocklin has clear blue skies.
